'THE HOLE'
'THE HOLE'
The Hole is one of the most interesting Spanish science fiction films of recent years. A futuristic dystopia that places us on a giant platform divided into levels where a group of men and women live confined trying to survive in extreme conditions. A film that uses ingenuity to criticize the capitalist system in which we find ourselves plunged as a society, but giving a glimmer of hope in the midst of the most hopeless abyss.
SUMMARY OF ‘THE HOLE’
To start talking about The Hole you have to understand what exactly Hole is and how it works. The hole is a project carried out by an organization by which a series of individuals are locked in a hexagonal platform made up of 333 levels where two people live on each level. These people have been able to enter of their own free will or as punishment for some crime and the time they can spend in the program ranges from years to months. The great novelty of the system is that from level 1 to 333 a platform loaded with food goes down for a certain time on each of the floors. The problem is that as the platform goes down, food becomes scarcer, and on the last floors there is absolutely nothing left. This produces extreme survival situations where everything is allowed to endure one more day standing.
Warning: contains spoilers!
Heavy, dense and difficult to understand, The Hole leaves behind some clues and questions that the viewer needs to attend to carefully.
The premise is simple and terrifying: the protagonist, Goreng, is in a vertical prison with two inmates per level and a huge rectangular pit in the center. Every day he descends a platform containing a lavish banquet laden with the finest delicacies.
Those on the first level are the first to eat.
Every few minutes, the platform lowers to the next level for
everyone to eat. The ritual is repeated through
countless levels and individuals are forced to eat the leftovers of their
predecessors. In this place, food is the only thing
that matters, since everyone's survival depends on it. An extreme metaphor
about the division of classes "Eat or be eaten"
The real message, the one that would really change everything, was the existence of the girl he just saved. A life capable of being born and developing in that place of death is a symbol of hope and a possible seed of transformation.
Seeing that he no longer needs to be the bearer of the message, since the existence of the girl speaks for itself, Goreng sees the spirit of Trimagasi, who announces that his mission is over. The two depart together as soon as the platform rises, carrying the girl to level zero.
We could conclude that the hero died having fulfilled his mission, but we could never know if the girl's arrival at the top changed anything or not.
